We are looking into a new camera, and my sister in law has the Canon EOS Rebel XS, and we love it. But the pricing is alittle high for the lenses and the camera. And the nikon is alittle cheaper, how do they compare?
Please let me know your thoguht and feeling about both, and also if you know of any good deals on either from reprutable places?

They are both excellent entry level cameras. The bodies are on par and which you buy has more to do with the camera system you decide to build .. changing between DSLR camera makers is far too expensive to be a viable plan, so choose wisely.
Currently both Nikon and Canon supply all the cameras and lenses used by the photographers who shoot for "deadline" clients (news, sports, etc).
When it comes to the most bang for the buck, Nikon seems to have the system for entry level photographers.
The best thing to do, is to just go into a camera store and hold both cameras in your hands … if you really want to test them, take an SD memory card with you and shoot using both cameras, using their respective 18-55 mm lenses at the lowest and highest ISO settings. Take the card home and look at the results.
Nikon is THE NAME in cameras. Canon is also groovy, but you can’t go wrong with Nikon. Also i’m saving up for a D60, and i/ve done my research, there are reasons why i’m getting one.

They will both take decent pictures, however, the canon XS is more of a family type dslr. The Nikon D60 is for a real photo enthusiast. Basically speaking, these cameras are in different leagues. i would go with the Nikon D60, its higher end, and the XS is canon’s lowest end model
Fhotoace made some very good points and I trust his advice. I did want to add though that lenses for both cameras can be very expensive. If your sister in law has a lot of lenses I would go with the Canon. This way you could share lenses. If you went with Nikon you wouldn’t be able to use any of her lenses. If she doesn’t have many lenses or wont let you borrow them then go with the camera you like best and is in your budget.
Man, David M always steals the words out of my mouth. Those cameras are VERY similar. Contrary to what another poster said, they’re not in a different league. Pretty much the only effective difference between them is the name and the way their controls are laid out.
But yeah, if I were you I’d go with the Canon because it means you can share lenses with your sister.
id go for the canon,all the controls are easy to spot and memorize.i use the eos 450d/ also known as EOS Rebel XSi entry level dslr.it’s a great piece of equipment.even if you buy nikon you’ll still end up buying lenses.and like what they said since your sis in law already got a canon u can swap lenses with her.
i would go with the nikon. 1. its cheaper, 2. the canon is no better, and 3. its been proven that nikon has better lenses.
